New mom-to-be, KAMC Anchor Lauren Matter, has found that educating herself during this pregnancy has helped tremendously.

All that research has helped her put together a birth plan that she feels is best for her.

But is it better to choose a natural child birth or medicated child birth?

There’s a lot of research for both and doctors and nurses at University Medical Center in Lubbock let the mom make the decision as to what she wants to happen during childbirth.

UMC Doula Pauline Mills breaks down the differences.

“With natural labor the recovery rate is better and it’s easier because you don’t have any drugs on board so you’re able to move your legs right after so you can get up and you can move around,” explains Mills. “There’s less problems with breast feeding because the baby didn’t get any drugs on board while you were in labor. For epidural moms, there’s pain relief. You get a chance to relax so your body can do what it needs to do.”

Mills says it’s important to know the differences to put together an educated birth plan.

But Mills adds, it’s also important to be flexible with that plan and don’t be so focused that there’s no wiggle room if something changes.
