Starting back in 2009, the Lubbock County Sheriff’s office started ‘Operation St. Nick’ — an effort to keep streets and homes safe during the holidays.

Sending out twice the patrol cars they usually do for the months of November and December, Sheriff Kelly Rowe said this year, burglary numbers are down but other areas of crime are up.

November-December 2016:

  • 21 gang members were identified and arrested
  • Nearly 1,200 grams of marijuana was seized, 19 grams of meth, and 2.8 grams of cocaine
  • 19 stolen cars were recovered
  • 18 identity thefts

“Our numbers are a little different this year because we are using gang investigators, street crime specialists that are looking,” said Rowe. “So that’s an added facet that we  didn’t have before.”

For 2017, Rowe said the Sheriff’s Department has a few things in the works with the Lubbock Police Department but they aren’t ready to formally announce the details just yet.
