Lubbock Animal Shelter partnered with KLBK to host its first Save a Pet: Adopt-A-Thon on October 7 and 8 that resulted in over 40 adoptions and 50 animals receiving microchips.
Local residents across the Hub City came out to support the event. Some even described it as a healing process.
“We recently lost a kitty,” Lubbock Resident Becky Wauer said “So I’ve been so upset. We heard about this Adopt-A-Thon and we’d thought we’d come out and see what was out here. And we found this little thing.”
Wauer adopted a new kitten to go join her five other furry friends.
“There was just something about her. I’m not sure if it’s a he or a she yet. But I just love yellow cats for one thing,” Wauer said.
Others who adopted through the event said they used it as a surprise birthday gift.
“My dad had a cat just like this and he’s gone,” Lubbock Resident Kim Martin said. “So we came up here hoping that we would find one like his old cat and we did.”
Lubbock Animal Shelter’s Assistant Director Kia Riemath said the number of pets they house changes daily. But on average, they could have more than 350 animals a day looking for a home.
They added that if you missed the “Adopt-A-Thon” over the weekend, anyone interested in adopting a pet can still come in and look or even play with their pets during normal business hours: Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
