Overdose Prevention Awareness & Remembrance Day Event in Lubbock Wednesday

Lubbock County VOICES Coalition and Starcare Specialty Health System are hosting an Overdose Prevention Awareness & Remembrance Day.  It will be a key remembrance event for those who have died from fatal drug overdoses since 2001.  On August 31 tens of thousands of people worldwide will stand alongside the friends and families of fatal overdose victims to reflect on those who have been lost. The event is organized on the understanding that no-one need feel shame or disgrace or alone over a drug overdose fatal or non-fatal.

The event will be at the Lubbock County Courthouse lawn from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

The community event will be family friendly.  We invite you to come out learn what steps you can take to help keep prevent and become aware of signs of overdose.  The event will include special speaker, food and games for the entire family.  We will also have a tribute to end the event for remembrance of those who have lost their lives to overdose.

“We want to encourage everyone to come out, we want to make this a family event and educate the community of how to prevention overdoses.” says Teresa Alvarado, Community Coalition Program Director, “With the number of fatalities from prescription drugs growing, August 31st is also a chance to see that medicines are not always our friends.  Painkillers and other pharmaceutical drugs play an important medical role but their use can have tragic long-term consequences.  Education, prevention and access to life saving measures and medication will curb this epidemic.”

The Lubbock County VOICES coalition continues to be actively involved in our community to encourage community collaboration in order to prevent drug use and abuse among youth.
