A Lubbock paramedic was one of the first responders on the scene to assess a newborn baby boy found abandoned in the driveway of a Tech Terrace home.

Marcus Edge said he has been on hundreds of calls but has never dealt with an abandoned child before. When they got the call early Monday morning they did not get many details, so Edge was curious what they would find.

“It’s not a typical call that you get here,” Edge said. “It makes you almost break down.”

Edge said he was happily surprised to find the baby still wrapped in the yellow blanket, asleep on a bed.

“You can tell it’s healthy just by assessing him real quick,” Edge said. “Looking at the baby you could tell the umbilical [cord] had just fallen off. You could tell it was very young.”

The paramedic and Field Training Officer sang high praises for the young woman, the Texas Tech student who found the newborn.

“She’s a fairly young lady,” Edge said, “Doesn’t have kids of her own, so to me she did an outstanding job being able to handle that situation.”

With a young son of his own at home, Edge said the call was especially tough.

“It definitely tugs at your heartstrings a little bit,” Edge said. “I have a ten month old of my own and just thinking ‘Wow you want something better for them.’ I also have a sister that would give anything to have a child. So having a child just left on the doorstep, it tugs at your heartstrings.  It’s hard. It’s a hard call for you.”

The baby was taken to UMC. Hospital officials said the baby is healthy and was discharged Tuesday afternoon. He remains in CPS custody.

Lubbock police are still looking for the baby’s parents. If you know anything about this case call Crimeline at (806)741-1000.
