The Compassionate Friends, Lubbock Chapter hosted its first “Walk to Remember” event at Buddy Holly Park on October 15.
The chapter’s founders said this nation-wide resource was missing a place for families to find support in Lubbock.
The event’s motto was, “You need not walk alone,” in support of families who have lost a child too soon. The founders said the goal of the event was to provide support for those parents or loved ones and celebrate the child’s life.
“This was my family’s baby and it’s important to support her grandparents, her sister, her parents, and I want to support her,” Event Participant Gloria Martin said. “I can’t think of anything anymore difficult than to have to lose your child.”
Martin lost her great-grandniece, Kinsley Ann, this past March 2016. She said they try to be “Kinsley Strong” moving forward.
Kinsley’s grandfather, David Gist, who drove down from Oklahoma to be there for the event, said meeting others who are going through similar paths help with the grieving process.
“With having that group, it helps everybody whether it’s you or it’s the person next to you, it helps you all get through it and be able to share stories and laughter,” Gist said.
The event started with a walk around Buddy Holly Park and ended in food and games in the center arena.
The Lubbock Chapter said they’re continuing to take donations. Find more information on how to support or join this chapter on their website here.
