Part of Avenue Q Closed Thursday Due to Flooding

Part of Avenue Q was closed Thursday because of high water on the road.

The area of the road near the Park Tower Apartments had water on the road, spilling onto the sidewalk.

John Briones lives in the Park Tower, up on one of the top floors, and said he will typically see water filling that part of the road when there is a lot of rain like that.

“I mean it’s just amazing it fills up so fast. You know it’s one of those deals you can’t see when it comes, but it happens. This is the second time since I have been here, as you can see it fills up fast, you can’t explain it,” Briones said.

He said that same area flooded weeks earlier. “It’s typical, like I said, this happened about two weeks ago in this area here, like I said, you can see Orlando’s which is underwater, again, I feel sorry for the guys,” he said.

The City of Lubbock Streets Department closed off part of the road, and Thursday night, their trucks were sitting near the water in the road, trying to keep drivers away.

Division Chief Steve Holland with Lubbock Fire Rescue said when they hear roads may have high water, they try to block those areas off as quickly as possible. “We ask the public to please recognize those situations, don’t get themselves in trouble, number one, we don’t want to have to rescue you, or see your car destroyed because of those,” Holland said.
