An area of downtown Lubbock was evacuated Monday afternoon as a precaution when a gas pipeline leaked.  Lubbock Fire Rescue was called to the 2300 block of Broadway at about 2:30 p.m.

“The gas line was struck by a City of Lubbock pipeline maintenance crew while conducting repairs on a sewer pipe,” LFR said in a written statement.

Atmos said in a brief written statement, “Atmos Energy construction crews are on site assessing the damage and are making sure the area is safe and allowing the natural gas to vent into the atmosphere.”

“All engineering tools are being utilized and we are working closely with Lubbock Fire Department in making the area safe,” Atmos also said.

No injuries were reported as of late Monday afternoon.

LFR is on scene of the 2300 block of Broadway where a large diameter gas line was struck and is leaking. As a precaution three structures immediately surrounding the area of the leak have been evacuated and Broadway Street between Avenue X and Avenue W has been closed. Atmos Energy is on scene and working to stop the leak. Please avoid the area immediately surrounding the leak and expect traffic delays due to the closure of Broadway.

GAS LEAK UPDATE:  The gas line was struck by a City of Lubbock pipeline maintenance crew while conducting repairs on a sewer pipe. Atmos Energy is continuing with efforts to make repairs. In addition, due to the closure of Broadway St. parents of children attending First Christian Child Development Center located at 2323 Broadway will need to pick up their children on the west side of the building (on Avenue X) at their regularly scheduled time.
