The Abilene Zoo is planning a world-class Earth Day. Accredited zoos throughout the country will host “Parties for the Planet” on Saturday, April 22, but in Abilene, the zoo will add musical beats among the beasts.

Guests can skip through spring blooms to the tunes of local bands and performing groups.

The zoo has invited “Umucyo” to this year’s MusicFest, asking for an encore performance from the group that amazed at last year’s Giraffe Safari opening ceremonies. Comprised of international students from Rwanda, many of these dancers are local college students who share the traditions of their homeland through costume and dance. Other impressive performers include a diverse musical mix: Mike Schuler, The Piano Man, the Abilene Community Band, Key City Winds, and Key City Jazz. The world-traveling pride of Abilene, Abilene and Cooper high schools’ string group “Revolution” will wrap up the day.

Earth-friendly education will come via honor students from Wylie ISD. They’ll provide memorable environmental presentations scattered throughout the grounds.

MusicFest programming is free with regular admission; zoo members admitted free. This event is underwritten by the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council, Texas Commission on the Arts and the City of Abilene.
