PECOS, TX — Faculty and students at Pecos High School are mourning the loss of a student who was killed in a Reeves County traffic accient
Amber Orona, 17, was a junior at Pecos High School. She was killed in a traffic accident Monday afternoon Interstate 20, approximately 2 miles west of Monahans.
Orona was traveling back to Pecos from Fort Worth with her boyfriend, Teno Navarrete, 20 and her 15-month old son, family members say.
Orona’s son was released from an Odessa hospital Tuesday. Her boyfriend, Navarrete, remains in the hospital.
Friends at Pecos High School organized a vigil for Amber Orona Tuesday night.
Hundreds gathered to remember Orona. Her close friend Cidney Leos planned the event because she wanted to see something positive come out of her death. Leos explained Orona was well liked by many at her school.
“She was very vibrant, loud and blunt,” Leos said. “One of those people you can’t help but laugh around all the time.”
Leos recalls her thoughts when she heard of her close friend’s death.
“I didn’t think it was real,” Leos said. “I even chuckled like she’s not going to die, she’s one of those people you think can never die.”
However, Leos says Orona’s death brought their circle of friends closer.
“When something like this happens in our hearts we come together,” Leos said.
“When one of us is in need, we come together.”
Cathy Baca, Orona’s aunt struggled to find the right words to describe her niece.
“She was a very caring person,” Baca said. “She always carried a smile, never a dull moment when she was around.”
Baca explained Orona’s main priority was her 15-month old son.
“She seemed like and was the perfect mother,” Baca said. “Her life changed when she had her little boy.”
In addition to the GoFundMe account, community members say they are planning a softball tournament in Orona’s memory. The proceeds will go to her family.
