A Pecos man is dead after he was attacked by pit bulls in the 1500 block of Eddy Street Thursday morning, according to police. Norberto Lagardo, 83, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lagardo was visiting the home on Eddy street feeding a relatives Labrador when he was attacked by the neighbors pitbulls, police say.
When police arrived they used pepper spray and tasers to gain access to the yard. The original call to police claimed dogs were fighting. Police chief, Clay McKinney believes Lagardo attempted to stop the fight.
“Legardo tried to break up the fight,” McKinney said. “Then the pit bulls turned on him.”
The Labrador involved in the fight sustained injuries but he is alive.
The Police Department has launched a criminal investigation following Lagardo’s death.
If the owner of the pit bulls is found to have been negligent he could be charged with a second degree felony and could face up to 20 years in prison, police say.
The City of Pecos abides by a leash law, requiring all residents to have their dogs on a leash in public or in a secure area on their property.
The owner of the dogs did not answer the door for a comment.
Police say the pitbulls did not have a violent history.
An autopsy has been ordered and the investigation continues.
