Lubbock Fire Rescue responded to the 3600 block of 32nd Street late Wednesday afternoon.  LRF said the residents came home to a house full of smoke and were not able to get inside.

“Three dogs and two cats were found deceased inside the structure,” LFR said.

Firefighters were seen taking a burned mattress out of the home.  The South Plains Chapter of the American Red Cross was asked to come help two residents of the home with a place to stay.

LFR also said the cause of the fire appeared to be an electric blanket which was left on while the residents left the home.

LFR released the following statement:

At 4:22 p.m. fire dispatch received a call from a resident who had returned home to find the house full of smoke and was unable to enter the house. E6, E8, E9, T17, 810 & 820 responded to the possible structure fire at 3617 33rd. E6 was first on scene and made an interior attack. They reported a small fire in the bedroom and that the fire was out at 4:31 p.m. The cause of the fire was determined to be from an electric blanket that had been left on all day. The fire was contained to the mattress and the home suffered no structural fire damage; however, the entire structure suffered heavy smoke damage. Three dogs and two cats were found deceased inside the structure. Red Cross was called to assist two female adults who were displaced from the home. Fire units cleared the scene at 5:16 p.m.
