Police Release Name of Victim in Burns Park Murder Case

The Lubbock Police Department is investigating the murder of 20-year-old Roy Reed who was shot during an altercation Wednesday night at Burns Park.

At approximately 7 p.m. Wednesday, dispatch received multiple calls of shots fired at Burns Park located at 23rd Street and Avenue L. When officer arrived, a large crowd of people were running in all directions.


As officers began to question people in the area, they were notified a gunshot victim had been taken to Covenant Medical Center by a private vehicle.

The victim, Roy Reed, was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

After questioning multiple people, detectives discovered two groups of people met at the park with the intention to fight. This was part of an ongoing dispute between the two groups, and it is estimated more than 50 people had come to the park to watch or participate in Wednesday night’s fight. At some point during the fight, multiple gunshots were fired.

No arrests have been made at this time.

Detectives with the Person’s Crimes Division are gathering information and sifting through evidence from last night’s shooting to identify the involved parties.
