Portales Police Chase Leads to Death of Lubbock Teen

A Lubbock teenager lost her life as the result of a crash in Portales, New Mexico early Tuesday morning, according to a friend of the family of the crash victim.

Police did not release names on Wednesday.

Police said someone reported a suspicious vehicle near 14th Street and Avenue D.  When Portales Police approached, there were three people in the car.

Police said the 18-year-old driver took off, leading to a brief chase.  The chase ended with a crash at University Drive and Avenue F.  University Medical Center confirmed that a 16-year-old girl from Lubbock was airlifted to UMC where she later died.

Family of the girl provided a name of the 18-year-old, but EverythingLubbock.com has not published it yet because the name has not been provided by an official source.  A person by that name was listed in serious condition at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

A 14-year-old boy in the vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Police indicated more details would not be officially confirmed until Thursday.
