After recent storms, new germs can be right at your doorstep from flooded areas.
Director of Public Health Katherine Wells said, “It’s really important to stay out of any flood waters because there could be diseases or other chemicals mixed in the waters and more than normal because of all of the runoff with all of the excess rain we’ve had.”
Wells recommended keeping your children away from these flooded areas, especially if they’re sick.
“Really with the playa lakes, it’s really important that the kids don’t go into the water,” Wells said. “They’re not places where children should be swimming. And then after you get home from the park, make sure you do really good hand-washing, especially prior to eating anything. Because you want to make sure they don’t get any bacteria into their bodies.”
Wells said to call your doctor if you’ve had a fever or diarrhea for more than a day.
Common symptoms can also include cramping, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, or weight loss.
