After Governor Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster for Lubbock last week, the American Red Cross has been aiding families across the South Plains. Laura Hann, Executive Director of the Red Cross serving the South Plains, said they immediately assessed what their needs were from shelter to clothing.
“So as of last night, we have met with nine separate families here in the Lubbock area and we have case workers who are working with the families individually,” Hann said.
The Red Cross aims to help families in need immediately, but will also assist those with long term needs, such as looking for housing. In addition to bottled water, they also hand out tarps, mops and cleaning supplies. Red Cross mental health workers are also helping those cope who have been hit with flood damage more than once.
The Red Cross works along side nonprofit organizations for specific donations as the family transitions. The best advice for those who are effected by floods in the future is to prepare now.
“Preparing now is definitely the way to go while the flooding has stopped. For the time being, we know historically we do get flash floods in the area so making sure you and your family have a plan and are prepared if something happens again,” Hann said.
