Former Red Raiders Danny Amendola, Jakeem Grant and Pete Robertson hosted a training session at D1 Sports in Lubbock on Saturday. The trio chose the Hub City, because of the connection they feel to the community.
“This was just a neighborhood that gave a lot to us,” said Amendola. “A community that supported us for a long time and we put a lot of good work in here and we have a lot of good friends and family, so it’s no secret that Lubbock is home for us.”
Grant has never been the biggest player on the field, but he hopes that those who attended the camp, see his success and use it as motivation in their own lives.
“For them being around us is great,” said Grant. “It makes them want to be at the next level with us, and it pushes them to success. Seeing some of the guys that look up to me and Pete, and the smaller guys that look up to me, and are like ‘Jakeem was a small guy and I’m a small guy, I get picked on’ and people tell me I couldn’t do it and that’s what I’m here for to show people, that size doesn’t matter.”
It wasn’t just kids at the camp. There were plenty of adults, who say getting to work out with three professional football players was a huge draw to the camp.
“It’s surreal,” said Zach Gilbert of Lubbock. “I mean, you see these guys, Danny’s already playing on Sunday, Jakeem and Pete are going to be playing on Sunday. So to get to come in here and do a workout with them, it’s such an amazing experience. They put you through the ringer, they’re gonna keep pushing you and I mean, they’re on a whole other level, but that’s the point of this place, is to try and get to that level.”
