Twelve departing Texas Tech football seniors participated in the annual Pro Day in front of representatives from 25 NFL teams, on Friday, in Lubbock.
Beginning in the weight room at the Football Training Facility, Demetrius Alston, Micah Awe, Le’Raven Clark, Jakeem Grant, Branden Jackson, Jared Kaster, Rika Levi, Keland McElrath, Alfredo Morales, Pete Robertson, Taylor Symmank and DeAndre Washington had the option to participate in the vertical jump, broad jump and bench press.
Awe impressed in the vertical jump (39”) and broad jump (10’ 7”), both of which were the best marks of the day, respectively.
From there, the athletes went outside and ran the 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle and three-cone drill, before doing position-specific drills for the scouts. Washington chose to lean on his impressive marks at the combine, and chose to participate in position drills only.
That is where Jakeem Grant had himself a day.
Grant began by zooming down the field in the 40-yard dash, clocking a 4.34, officially. Some scouts had even faster times down for Grant. That time would have been the second-fastest by a receiver at the NFL combine, and the 12th fastest in the last 10 years.
From there, Grant went on to finish the 20-yard shuttle in 3.95, which would have been the fastest time among receivers at the combine by 0.12 seconds.
“Some people told me it was a 4.3, and some told me 4.1, but either is perfectly fine with me,” Grant said. “[Those are times] that a lot of guys can’t run.”
The 2016 NFL Draft will take place April 28-30, in Chicago, Ill.
