Texas Tech fans can get their first glance at the 2016 Big 12 Conference trophy Thursday night as the Red Raiders will be honored in a pregame ceremony prior to the series opener against West Virginia.
The pregame ceremony is tentatively slated for 6:20 p.m. Thursday night in advance of a scheduled 6:37 p.m. first pitch between the Red Raiders and Mountaineers. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance of Thursday’s game as only a limited supply of seats remain.
The Red Raiders clinched the outright Big 12 regular-season title this past Sunday, their fifth conference championship in program history and first since Tech won the 1998 Big 12 Tournament. It is Tech’s first regular-season title since the Big 12’s inaugural season in 1997.
Tech enters the West Virginia series having won six of its seven Big 12 series this season as the Red Raiders clinched the title with a 17-4 record in league play, its best mark through 21 games since that same 1997 campaign.
The Red Raiders, who were picked to finish fifth in the Big 12 preseason poll, used a school record 11-game conference winning streak to build their current four-game lead in the conference standings. The winning streak, the fifth-longest in conference history, spanned an entire month (March 20-April 23) and included series sweeps over the likes of Oklahoma, Kansas State and No. 16 Oklahoma State.
The West Virginia series concludes the regular season for the Red Raiders, who have been on a nine-day break from competition due to Tech’s finals schedule. Tech defeated Abilene Christian, 7-2, on May 10, marking its seventh win over its last eight contests.
Tickets are still on sale for all three games against the Mountaineers. Fans can purchase tickets in advance by visiting TexasTech.com or by calling 806-742-TECH.
