Hundreds came out to support the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Lubbock County Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Rhodes Perrin Recreation Center on the Lubbock Christian University Campus.

Relay for Life is the main fundraiser for the local American Cancer Society chapter. ACS is hoping to raise more than $100,000 this year.

“We get bigger every year and that’s the goal,” event lead Julie Heinrich said. “The goal is to continue to get bigger every year, and continue to raise awareness for this disease, and fight back against it.”

David Harper and Natalie Brown are relaying for their mother Robbie.  Robbie died of pancreatic cancer in December 2015.

“Cancer is one of those things that is not discriminatory, it can happen to anyone, at any time, at any place,” Harper said. “If we can come together, raise money and find a cure for this, then that’s what we’re going to do.”

Harper and Brown said this is the first time they are participating in Relay for Life and that it’s a great way for them to bring their family together and honor their mother’s incredible spirit.

“She made it a goal of hers before she passed to get her family together and become stronger, become one,” Harper said. “We have taken that and we are still going with keeping our family strong.”

All funds raised during Relay for Life go towards American Cancer Society research, treatment and finding a cure.

“We bring the community together and raise awareness about this,” Heinrich said. “We can help people who have gone through it, or are going through it, know that they aren’t alone, they have a community out here. We’re here just having fun.”

“Donate guys, even if you’re not out here with us walking,” Brown said. “It’s never too late to go to the American Cancer Society page and donate, donate, donate. Even if it’s a dollar, donate.”
