Some residents in Southwest Lubbock are worried about their safety after hearing what they believe to be gunshots in their neighborhood.

Over a three day period between February 19-21, a resident and his wife said they heard gunshots multiple times while at home near 84th Street and Pontiac Avenue.

“Somebody shot a whole clip from a 9mm in the street,” the man said. His identity has been concealed to protect the family’s privacy.

Lubbock Police confirmed three calls reported February 19 around 11:45 p.m., one call reported February 20 at 10:53 p.m., and one call February 21 at 1:28 p.m. for shots fired in the neighborhood.

The resident said at least one of those instances happened about 100 feet from his home.

He indicated an apartment complex in his neighborhood may have surveillance footage supporting his claims.

Calls to that company were not returned Friday afternoon.

“What’s concerning about this is that it’s coming from the same general vicinity, and that’s what our patrol division is focusing on is saturating that area and hoping that it either stops or they can catch somebody doing it so they can put a stop to it themselves,” said Lieutenant Ray Mendoza with Lubbock Police.

“When you discharge a firearm and you aim it up to the sky and that bullet has got to come down somewhere,” he added. “So it could still hurt somebody. It could still kill somebody, and so people need to be very cautious if they choose to partake in that kind of activity.

The resident said he was worried for his safety and the safety of his family.

“We just ask people that they please not partake in that kind of illegal activity and keep in mind that we don’t know where that bullet is going to come down and hurt somebody.”

Mendoza said LPD’s Patrol Division has launched an investigation.
