With snow in the Lubbock forecast, there are local groups and non-profits that are offering assistance to low income families who may need help paying their gas and heating bills.
Marinda Heinrich with Atmos Gas said they offer an annual program ‘Share the Warmth’ where clients can pitch in a little extra on their gas bill–and the money goes toward families in need. Last year the program accumulated $266,000 for families across the West Texas area.
“Say your bill is $22.80, it will round up to $23.00, and that would go toward the share the warmth program,” said Heinrich.
Joy Loper with the Neighborhood House said they are also a resource people can look into, as they help to distribute the funds from the warmth program, as well as receive a grant from Texas Housing and Community Affair.
“As long as they are under the 150% of the federal poverty level they qualify based on income,” said Loper. “One of the things about this particular grant are the priorities, very high energy burdens, someone disabled or with children five or younger.”
Other resources people can look into are: 211, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, and South Plains Community Action Agency.
