On Wednesday, Resthaven funeral home staff members spent the day volunteering and preparing hot meals at lunch and dinner for local law enforcement as apart of their first annual “Back the Blue” event.
“We’re just expressing our appreciation for our men in blue who protect and serve our community,” said John Jones, sales manager of the funeral home. “We’re just trying to give a little bit back. They come out and help us with funeral processions and serving our communities and our families.”
Volunteers served up hot dogs, hamburgers, snacks and drinks to law enforcement and their families. They say in light of recent events involving law enforcement, that as long as Lubbock police continue to protect the community, they will continue to back the blue.
“It’s hard for them to leave their home knowing their wives and kids they’re leaving behind, not knowing what they’re going to encounter throughout their day, so it’s a big dedication for them,” said Max Gonzales, park assistant superintendent. “It feels great to know that we’re involved with them.”
Officer Lahoma Moran will celebrate 24 years with LPD next month, she says in that time support from the community has been unwavering, but that in light of recent events, Wednesday’s gathering means even more to her.
“It’s really humbling and it’s makes me feel that I have the privilege of serving here rather than the other way around,” said Officer Moran. “I feel very honored to be apart of this community.”
Resthaven says they look forward to celebrating the event for years to come, and are planning to put on similar events for local pediatricians and teachers.
