Officials at South Plains College are offering a $1,000 reward for information after several buildings on the Levelland campus were shot at.

Campus Police Chief Nickolis Castillo said “a lot of damage across campus” was discovered on November 18. Police said at least one person was believed to have shot at multiple buildings late Thursday night or early Friday morning.

“We believe the damage to have been caused by some kind of projectile, possibly BB or pellet guns, or maybe even a larger-caliber, air-powered rifle,” Castillo said.

“We haven’t found any casings, or anything like that so we believe it to be an air-powered gun of some kind,” he stated.

Castillo estimated a minimum of $5,000 in damages to the property.

He said no suspects were identified.

“We are currently looking through surveillance footage. Looks like they tagged some pretty good areas,” Castillo added.

“I know our math building was hit, I believe our communications and a science building and then there has been some others where we at first thought maybe it was a rock-chip from a lawnmower,” said Cathy Mitchell, Vice President of Student Affairs at SPC.

“I don’t feel like they were in any danger because of the type of damage that was done, [but] it always adds to heightened anxiety,” Mitchell explained.

“Usually when that happens we have a rash of criminal mischief throughout Levelland and in the wake of that we get a few windows broken out as well,” Castillo added. “This time around, we had all of the damage extensive to South Plains College, and secluded to this area only. That’s just something we’re not used to.”

“We pride ourselves at SPC that it’s safe, and we like the way it looks and I think we had a group coming in on Saturday right after so we have boarded up windows and things and that’s just not the impression that SPC gives,” said Mitchell.

The person, or people, found at fault, face a felony criminal mischief charge.
