Lubbock county roads are still being worked on as fast as possible, according to Lubbock County Commissioners. At the commissioners meeting Monday, they heard an update on County Road projects for the last few weeks.
During that update, commissioners were told by county staff that there are 58 open work orders on unpaved roads, and 91 work orders on paved roads.
County Commissioner Mark Heinrich said when it comes to filling potholes, every entity in the area that needs the mix for repairs is in the same boat.
“Some days we have to wait in line, some days we don’t even get hot-mix to repair, so it’s not a daily, we don’t get hot-mix daily,” he said. “So there’s a lot of issues that go into the potholes not being filled in a timely matter, we know about them, we make work orders, and we’re getting them as quickly as we can, so that the traveling public will have a safe road to travel on.”
It’s not just potholes that they’re dealing with repairing, they’re also working to get material when it comes to caliche repair. One of the caliche pits for Lubbock County currently has lots of water in it.
“The pit is full of water, 32 feet. So we’re having to get another source that’s further away, and that’s hampering our caliche projects,” Heinrich said.
County employees said there are other areas to get caliche from, but described it as limited.
Heinrich said he’s appreciative of the rain, but right now, they’re working hard to get roads fixed.
“We appreciate the rain, it’s great we have it, and it’s great for our economy and all, but if we could have it in an inch a day, rather than 7 inches in a day, it would help everybody’s condition,” he said.
