An Amarillo father is upset after he and his son rode a roller coaster at an Amarillo amusement park and experienced a seat belt issue. The safety concerns of rides and roller coasters are rising since the incident.
Delbert Latham told MyHighPlains that he is upset after he and his son visited the park Wonderland. Latham said while on the roller coaster Mouse Trap his son was slipping from underneath the safety bar after his safety belt broke.
The nearest Texas amusement park to Wonderland is Joyland, an amusement park in Lubbock which has been running since the 70’s. Joyland owner David Dean said they are always ensuring safety and making sure all their seat belt systems function.
“Overall I believe the amusement industry works very hard to keep people safe,” said Dean. “It’s an incident like which is very unfortunate that it happened, but it has a devastating effect on a business and its reputation, and the aftermath of those involved.”
Latham shared a cell phone video of the incident, showing his son reacting in fear when his seat belt malfunctioned. However, Latham has since taken the video down and revoked his permission for sharing it.
Joyland has several rides where you are not allowed to carry any hand held devices like cell phones. Dean advises that no matter the ride, participants should opt to not use electronics because that extra distraction could complicate your fun.
“We do inspections every day or every day that were open,” said Dean. “We check the rides out, from there we also do preventative maintenance, and we bring in other inspectors to look for things that we may not be experts in.”
