An arrest warrant made public on Friday morning revealed new details about the murder of Antonio Gutierrez Garcia III, 25, of Mission. Garcia was found dead on the morning of September 11.

Jonathan Eric Herrera, 28, was charged with murder Thursday. He was already in jail for unrelated charges including attempted capital murder of a police officer, felon in possession of a firearm, fraud, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading police, burglary of a building, tampering with evidence, and several other charges.

The arrest warrant said Garcia’s body was discovered in the bar ditch on County Road 2700, one half of a mile south of FM 1585. Herrera is accused of shooting Garcia three times.

The warrant also said, “Shell casings at the crime scene were ballistically matched to the same firearm used on the 13th of September 2015 by Jonathan Herrera. During that incident it is documented that he fled from LPD and fired three shots at the officers.”

The warrant also said, “Herrera was found to be in possession of this firearm that was ballistically matched to the firearm that was used in this homicide.”

“Also noted at the crime scene of this homicide was a like shoe impression [which] was compared to the shoes that Jonathan Herrera was wearing at the time of his arrest,” the warrant said.

The warrant said that according to three witnesses, Herrera stole the gun from a vehicle at the Villa Motel on September 5. The warrant did not describe a motive for the shooting.

Herrera remained in the Lubbock County Detention Center Friday on a long list of charges.
