A guide dog is recovering after it was attacked by another canine on an Abilene street. The guide dog’s owner, who is visually impaired, says that he is now traumatized to even go outside.
Mike George says that he relies on his guide dog to be his eyes and that she relies on him for food and shelter, but now he cannot walk down the street without fearing another dog attack.
It was breakfast time for George and his guide dog Scarlett. It was their second day living in the Key City. They decided to walk a couple of blocks to a local bakery.
“Much to my horror…breaking the silence….A dog came charging out of the yard,” George says.
A dog latched onto Scarlett’s neck bringing her down onto the ground. George says he felt helpless during the attack.
“I cried for help, but there was nobody that could help,” George says. “Finally, people showed up, but by then, it was too late.”
Scarlett suffered injuries to her neck and legs.
“People stood around frozen. They didn’t say or do anything. They didn’t offer to take me to the vet after she was injured and her legs were practically broken.”
Scarlett is now recovering, but is unable to wear her harness. George believes she may no longer be able to work. He is now left with veterinarian bills which he says will total thousands of dollars.
“It hurts a lot because she was my eyes,” George says. “She wasn’t doing anything wrong. It could have been me.”
George claims that since the attack Scarlett has been suffering seizures. The staff at Animal Services has confirmed the attack but would not comment on the incident since it is under investigation. KTAB News was also told that a dog is in custody.
