Administrators at the Children’s Hope Lubbock campus and owner of the Yoga Salon have teamed up to bring yoga to abused children at the Hope residential center. The Yoga Salon held the first class of the Children’s Hope sessions today.
The idea came about a very “right-time-right-place” moment.
Both the administrator, Danny Pectol, from Children’s Hope and the owner of the Yoga Salon, Megan Graham, happened to be at the same restaurant when Pectol overheard Graham talking about her yoga studio.
“I said, ‘you got a yoga studio? We’ve got to set this up! I need a yoga class for my kids, because it’s good for their breathing, it’s good exercise and it really helps with all the things that we’re trying to do,'” said Pectol.
It only took two weeks for the two to get the ball rolling. Today, the Yoga Salon hosted the group of kids from Children’s Hope for the first time in what both sides will be a developmental and therapeutic journey.
“Yes, you’re going to get a workout. Yes the kids are going to get some physical activity, but hopefully they’re also going to get those self esteem skills,” Graham said. “Seeing the wonder of their body, how strong they are, how flexible they are, realizing they can do so much more than what they think they can.”
The primary goal for these classes is to not only help the children gain physical strength, but to help them achieve a new sense of confidence.
As of right now, the classes will be held weekly.
