Five people were killed and eight others were injured in a shooting incident Friday afternoon at the Fort Lauderdale airport.

The gunman opened fire in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2.

CNN quoted law enforcement sources as saying the suspect had a gun checked in his baggage and had declared the firearm.

The suspect flew to Florida from Alaska.  When he arrived at the Fort Lauderdale airport, he retrieved his bag, took out the gun and started firing, sources told CNN.

His name was not yet released.

The gunman was in custody and was a lone shooter, Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief told CNN.

“We have no evidence at this time that he was acting with anyone else. He is currently in custody and we’re investigating,” Sharief said.

Investigators are looking into the suspect’s motive, she said.
