The streets of Dallas turned violent when shots rang out during a protest Thursday evening. As of early Friday morning, Dallas Police reported five officers in total had died.

The protests came amid recent police shootings of two men, Alton Sterling in Louisiana, and Philando Castile in Minnesota.

Signs reading “Black Lives Matter” were seen at the protest. Both Sterling and Castile were black.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown issued a statement to local media, WFAA reported.

“Tonight it appears that two snipers shot ten police officers from elevated positions during the protest/rally,” Brown said. “Three officers are deceased, two are in surgery and three are in critical condition. An intensive search for suspects is currently underway. No suspects are in custody at this time. We ask that any citizen with information regarding the shootings tonight call 214-671-3482.”

Brown updated the information to the community live on Periscope Thursday evening.

He said 11 officers were shot, instead of his previous total of 10.

In a press conference, Brown said police believed the suspects may have planted a bomb downtown.

Brown said two Dallas Police officers were killed, and a Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer was killed.

Dallas Police announced via twitter late Thursday that a fourth officer had died.

“Four DART police officers were shot in downtown Dallas. 1 deceased, others not life-threatening. No IDs yet. Updates via twitter,” DARTmedia reported in a tweet.

The scene near Griffin and Lamar Street was being considered as an active-shooter situation, police said.

Dallas City Councilmember Philip T. Kingston said “11 injured. All police except one. 2 DPD deceased. 1 DART deceased. At least 2 shooters. None in custody. One in negotiations,” in a tweet Thursday night.
