Hardin-Simmons University’s riding team is one of the highlights of the Petersburg Day celebration this year.
Called Six White Horses, it is made up six beautifully matched horses ridden by Hardin-Simmons students. The drill team will also perform in the parade but also at the Community Center. We are also honored to have several members of the Undefeated Lubbock Christian University Ladies Basketball Team who won the National Championship this year. Not only will we see them in the parade, but they will also be available at the Community Center to visit with folks and sign autographs.
Petersburg Day will kick off with a Veterans Ceremony at 9:00 a.m. honoring and celebrating those among our community who have bravely served this country. At 10:30 the Parade will begin at Main St. and Ave A at the north end of Main. Once again Don Castleberry will carry on a tradition of leading the parade. Carrying the flags this year are Cory & Brook Castleberry. They are the fifth generation of Castleberry’s with Petersburg roots. The parade will include motorcycle clubs from towns around the area, the Kiva Go Karts, several vintage car clubs, antique cars & tractors, horse groups and horse drawn carriages and so much more. Lots of candy and free pizza coupons will be gathered by folks watching the parade.
Following the Parade, everyone will move to the Petersburg Community Center at Ave E and East 1st Street. Many civic organizations will be selling food and drinks. A children’s area will be set up with water games, bounce houses, a maze and water balloons. Vendors from the community and all over the area will entice you with their merchandise. Live Music is provided by Judge Coleman and the Justice Brothers.
Inside the Community Center the Legacy Quilt Show will feature quilts made by the early pioneer women of the area, their daughters and granddaughters. Embroidered pieces will be displayed too. Also inside are more vendors, a cakewalk game, and a video telling the story of shops, businesses and people of the community from the early 1920’s through 1960’s.
The Softball Tournament starts at 1:00 p.m. at the school ball field on the west side of town at Ave. D. and West 4th St. Food Trucks will be on hand to quench any (non-alcoholic) thirst and satisfy any appetite. In addition, the Catholic Church is holding their Summerfest from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. There will be more children’s games, all kinds of authentic Mexican food and fun for people of all ages. The church is just north of the ball field at the corner of highway 54 and West 4th Street.
Six o’clock back at the Community Center the F.F.A provide a supper of barbeque, beans, and potato salad with a drink for $6.00. At 7:00 Travis Williams & Deanne Roberts will kick off the Country Dance. Entry is $5.00 per person. The dance will conclude about 10:00 p.m. Both Travis and Deanne are well-known and well-loved musicians in this area.
Come out early and stay late. Petersburg Day is your last opportunity for a great day of fun before school starts, and the lazy days of summer are over.
