Shaquille Maurice Cofer, 22, of Lubbock pleaded guilty Friday to the murder of Christopher Jones who was initially identified by police as Christopher Ayers. Court records said the shooting was July 7, 2013 at the Skool House, 1700 East 4th Street.
Cofer agreed to serve 20 years in prison as part of a plea deal.
As of Friday, his codefendants, Treyci K’shon Neece, 20, of Clovis, and Jaquan Antuan Ward, 21, of Lubbock, were still in jail awaiting a trial date for murder.
According to police statements at the time, Ayers had an argument with a group of men at the club. A nearby officer heard 15 to 20 shots. Ayers was taken to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
During the plea hearing in court Friday, the judge told Cofer, “I know you’ll think about what you’ve done. I hope you find a good reason for change when you get out of prison.”
