One Slaton resident is working to raise money to help with the cost of new bulletproof vests for the Slaton Police department.

The man, who goes by the nickname Squeaky, said he has lived in Slaton since the 1960s, and has a lot of family members who had ties to law enforcement.

Because of this, it’s a group of people that are near and dear to his heart.

“My background, I have a lot of family that’s been in law enforcement over the years, so I kind of have a special spot in my heart for law enforcement,” Squeaky said.

He decided he wanted to help purchase new bulletproof vests for the Slaton Police Department to replace existing vests.

“I went and found out that their life vests, their bullet proof vests, that they wear daily, to help maybe maintain their life, I found out that most of our patrol men wear one that’s expired,” Squeaky said.

Squeaky’s goal is to raise $8,000 in the next few months.

Any donations can be made to any Slaton Lions Club members or to any Slaton bank or credit union.

EverythingLubbock.com spoke to the Slaton Police Chief, Trevor Barnes, who said Squeaky is just a Slaton resident who wants to do something good for the Slaton Police Department.

According to the Lions Club website, under the listing for the Slaton chapter, Barnes is listed the 2015-2016 president of the Slaton Lions Club.
