It’s been said there’s no place like home. But for the many foster youth who age out of the system at age 18 – there no longer is a home.
Enter Lubbock’s nonprofit, Sondra’s Song. On Feb. 8 at 2 p.m., the organization will officially open their doors to their residential home, located at 1712 14th Street. A ribbon-cutting will take place promptly at 2 p.m.
“The home can house up to eight youth and is nearby transportation, Texas Tech University and a host of businesses so these young adults can begin to find promise in their future,” said Sandi Turner, Sondra’s Song executive director. “I’m so excited this day has finally arrived.”
Sondra’s Song – the brainchild of Turner, who was recently-named a 2016 Woman of Excellence – exists to help youth aging out of the foster system work toward independence and self-sufficiency. The nonprofit’s supportive services include mentoring, assistance with transportation, life skills, personal items, and access to employment and education resources.
“I have had a goal of finding enough grants and donations to put a roof over these kids’ heads for more than three years now,” Turner said. “The day has finally arrived. It brings tears to my eyes; and I can’t give enough thanks to all those who gave support for this to finally happen.”
