Four employees with the Shallowater Sonic are now being seen as heroes after they jumped into action when one of their customers had a heart attack.
April Guel recalls the moment she first realized there was an emergency at hand.
“The first thing I heard was a honk and thought it was a customer honking at another customer, so I ran back in to get another order, then answered the headset. When it rang it was a lady screaming ‘help! help!'”
Guel, and her coworkers Brandon Smith, Audrey Garza and Jazmine Villa immediately rushed to the customer’s vehicle and began to see what they could do.
The man was 81-years-old and was suffering a heart attack. Smith consoled his wife and checked the man’s pulse, both Garza and Guel were communicating with dispatchers who instructed Villa to perform CPR.
“I was hesitant at first because I was like I don’t know this man I don’t know what I could do so then I ran out and that’s when we got him on the floor and started doing compressions. It was very scary,” said Villa.
EMS arrived to the scene immediately, but Villa had to continue administering CPR until the man was able to be transported to the hospital.
The following days the employees would have never guessed that people would be approaching them hailing them as heroes.
“‘You you the little one did compressions?’ I’ve gotten that, and I’ve gotten ‘wow good job you know I’m really glad you were able to do that I’m really glad you were on the shift when that happened,'” said Villa.
