When severe weather strikes we often focus on tornadoes and damaging hail but there is another side affect of the storms that is just as dangerous; downed power lines.  That’s why the South Plains Electric company is teaching your children what to do if they find a downed line.

Lynn Simmons, Director of Communications, told us,  “We have 5 different stations that we’re doing out here.  Showing them the arcing demonstration where they can see the actual power on the line.  We do an underground demonstration and then we have two areas for pole top rescue and bucket truck rescue and then the linemen interact with the kids showing them different tools and protective wear and then the final station is a video that kind of pulls everything together for them.”

It’s not only informative but fun for both the kiddos and the linemen.

Simmons explained, “We keep the message pretty basic, one thing that has changed is the involvement of the linemen doing the presentations and we have a lot of young apprentice linemen and with our seasoned veterans they make a really good crew to present to the fourth graders.”

She also says keeping your kids safe makes it well worth the time and investment.

Simmons said,  “The Star testing is over so these kids are ready to get out and burn off some energy and so we’re just glad we can help them do that plus learn some lessons.”

After a lot of studying, the kids were more than ready to get out of the classroom and let loose.

Lynn Simmons expressed, “South Plains Electric loves doing this program because if we save the life of  one child over the years it’s worth the time and investment and as a cooperative it’s just one way we give back to the communities we serve.”
