South Plains Food Bank Has Summer of Sharing In New Facility

The South Plains Food Bank is celebrating their seventh year of their summer sharing program. The food bank’s CEO, David Weaver said that seven years back, the bank was completely running out of food due to people going on summer vacation.

“Making food donations to the food bank isn’t always top of mind for everybody, but the needs of the hungry go on, as we say ‘hunger doesn’t take a vacation.” said Weaver.

West Texas Chevy Dealers presented a check to the food bank of $10,000 on Tuesday, where CEO David Weaver announced that the bank’s summer goal is to get 130,000 pounds of food through their doors.

The new director of development, Megan Bratton, said she has volunteered at the bank for eight years and that she worked her way up to her position.

” The clients that we serve every single day, when we see the faces of them, and just know, through their thank yous, their God bless yous, that we are making a difference, and that’s what keeps me here”

Right now the food bank is serving clients from 25 different surrounding counties, feeding 57,000 people a year. Bratton said that the bank still sees a hunger gap of 35,000 and thinks that this new facility will help them expand their mission.
