Although the Christmas season may be over, we’re still in the season of giving, something the South Plains Food Bank is all too familiar with.

In order to help them in their goal in feeding thousands across the South Plains, the United Family was able to raise nearly $47,000 for the food bank.

“I think what i love most about working at the South Plains Food Bank are the people that I get to work with. The food bank is really a cross roads of people who are hungry, but also people who care about the hungry,” said David Weaver, CEO of the South Plains Food Bank, who has been working with the food bank for 19 years.

Weaver says he and those he works with are appreciative for the relationship between the food bank and United Family stores.

“It really is neighbors feeding neighbors,” said Weaver. “They were giving food to us. People could go in and and they could buy the equivalent of a sack of groceries for eight dollars and we’re getting that product. So we’re getting both a financial donation as well as product donation from United.”

(LUBBOCK, Texas) – The United Family® announced today the company’s annual holiday food drive raised $46,479 for the South Plains Food Bank. This year’s campaign was extended an extra week to give guests an additional opportunity to donate.

Lubbock-area United Supermarkets, Market Street and Amigos locations sold 3,038 pre-packed bags valued at $24,308, which consisted of a week’s worth of meals. The pre-packaged bags were sold for $8 and allowed guests to make a physical donation with the convenience of a register transaction.

“We are grateful for the generosity of our guests, which will greatly impact many Lubbock families in need this holiday season,” said Mary Myers, communications and community relations manager for The United Family. “This donation is a testament to our community coming together to support the local food banks when they need our help the most.”

To participate in the food drives, store guests were able to make donations of nonperishable food at United Supermarkets, Market Street or Amigos locations throughout Lubbock. Guests could also contribute by adding a cash donation to their bill during checkout.
