Powerful storms on the South Plains left cars flooded and damaged. Local auto repair stores have towed cars overnight because of damage from flooding. Local experts said engine failure has been the most prevalent issue seen in vehicles. Josh Page, owner of Christian Brothers Automotive, said a handful of cars were brought in Thursday.

“Any time the water exceeds the depth of the tires there’s a good likelihood that that water gets sucked up through the air intake in the front of the vehicle and then into the engine and water and oil don’t mix and so it causes engine failure,” Page said.

Cars can also have electrical issues that can damage airbag sensors or the battery of the car. Airbag sensors are located on the floorboard of the car and can be complicated to fix if they are damaged. The best option is to stay home, for your safety and others, when severe weather hits, according to Page.

“I think that people understanding driving slow and safer than they might usually drive is important in inclement weather…making sure they have enough room in front and behind them so they have the breaking ability,” Page said.
