(WFLA) – Southwest is joining a number of airlines banning a Noah’s Ark of emotional support animals.
On Friday, the carrier announced a number of new rules regarding which animals passengers can bring with them on flights.
The airline said it will only let dogs, cats and miniature horses in the cabin, according to a statement on its website. Insects, spiders, rabbits, ferrets and rodents are among a list of animals not allowed on board. The rule goes into effect Sept. 17.
Each traveler is limited to one emotional support animal, which should be kept in a carrier or on a leash through the duration of the flight.
Although miniature horses are not included in the definition of service animal, they are recognized as service animals by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
According to The Observer, the horses are typically stronger than most service dogs, allowing them to better help people with disabilities balance. They can also live for up to 30 years, which is longer than most dogs.
If you plan to fly with an emotional support animal, make sure to call your airline in advance.
