Squirrels likely caused a house fire in Cross Plains that killed a mother and her disabled son.
Cross Plains Police Chief Don Gosnell said the Fire Marshal believes squirrels chewed through wires in the attic of a home on the 500 block of NE 3rd Street, causing them to arc and catch fire around 5:45 a.m. Saturday.
The Callahan County Sheriff’s Department said Sherry Ables, 68, and her son, Norman Taylor, 50, passed away at the scene of the fire.
Sheriff Terry Joy said Taylor was disabled and Ables was trying to help him get outside, but her attempt was unsuccessful.
