An 11-year-old boy died Wednesday afternoon after an accidental shooting.

The shooting occurred at his home in the Martinsville area.

The Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office said the boy went into his parents’ closet for an unknown reason and found a pistol.

The pistol went off, shooting him in the head.

Emergency responders were called to the home just before 2 p.m. and arrived to find the boy’s mother administering CPR.

The boy was taken to a Nacogdoches hospital, where he later was pronounced dead.

Family members were at the residence when the shooting occurred.

The boy, who was an avid hunter, had also taken a hunters education class.

The NCSO is conducting an investigation into the shooting. An autopsy had been ordered.

The sheriff’s office said it will not be releasing the child’s identity out of respect to his family.
