During this Labor Day Weekend, the New Mexico State Police will have a strong law enforcement presence in hopes it will have a direct effect on the driving behaviors of motorists during the holiday weekend, reducing the number of crashes, DWI’s, and increase motorist safety.
The New Mexico State Police wants to send a simple message to drivers this Labor Day holiday: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. The DWI crackdown is part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s efforts to stop drunk drivers and help save lives. The crackdown is well underway and runs through September 4, 2017.
So far, this year, preliminary data shows there have been 76 DWI related traffic fatalities on New Mexico roads – that’s down almost 30 percent from this time last year. Drunk Driving or impaired driving is not an acceptable behavior. During this Labor Day holiday, we will make zero exceptions for drunk driving, losing just one life from an unnecessary crash involving an impaired driver is simply intolerable.
Officers will be enforcing all aspects of the law over the holiday weekend to include Distracted Driving and Speeding. The New Mexico State Police will be active at our State Parks enforcing boating violations as well, to ensure a safe and enjoyable Labor Day Weekend for all.
The safety of motorists is a priority of the New Mexico State Police and officers will continue holiday travel operations throughout the upcoming fall season. We encourage the public to drive safely and obey all laws while traveling the motorways of New Mexico.
