The statewide average gas price increased nearly 15 cents in the past week, according to a news release from AAA Texas.
AAA Texas said the last time prices experienced such a large spike was back in August 2017, around the time of Hurricane Harvey.
“Prices at the pump are spiking as global crude inventories tighten and crude oil prices are hitting their highest level so far this year,” said Daniel Armbruster, AAA Texas/AAA New Mexico spokesperson.
“Inventories are likely to continue to tighten and keep gas prices higher through the end of the month,” Armbruster also said.
On Saturday, AAA reported the statewide gas price average in Texas was at $2.14 for a gallon regular unleaded fuel
This price was roughly 11 cents higher than last Saturday and 12 cents lower than one year ago.
Drivers across the U.S. are seeing more expensive gas prices as a result of ongoing refinery problems coupled with crude oil prices hitting their highest level so far this year as global crude inventories tighten, AAA Texas said.
The national average price for regular unleaded was $2.39 per gallon on Saturday, AAA reported.
This price was roughly 9 cents more than last Saturay and roughly 13 cents lower than one year ago.
On Saturday, AAA reported that average price for regular unleaded in Lubbock was $2.10 a gallon
GasBuddy.com was reporting an average price on Saturday of $2.08 in Lubbock.
Drivers in the Midland-Odessa area continue to pay the highest prices in Texas. The lowest prices in the state on Saturday were in the Tyler area.
