If you go to www.lupevaldez.org you expect to see information about Democratic gubernatorial candidate Lupe Valdez, but one doesn’t expect to see a banner at the top saying she’s “Wrong for Texas.”
The attack website is owned by Texans for Greg Abbott, the Republican governor’s political campaign. The site contains a video that calls her “too liberal for Texas.” Records show the domain was purchased in November of last year.
This comes just less than two weeks before the May 22 runoff between Valdez and Andrew White, a Houston-based businessman. The video focuses on Valdez’s stances on sanctuary cities and abortion, saying the former Dallas County sheriff is endorsed by Planned Parenthood, an organization Abbott defunded.
White’s campaign website outlines his opposition to Abbott’s law against sanctuary cities and says he while he supports that life begins at conception, he wouldn’t impose his own beliefs on women’s health.
Valdez tweeted a statement in response to the website saying she knew the importance of looking out for all Texans.
“The New Texas that I’m fighting for is one where all Texans have opportunities to succeed,” the statement said. “There is nothing too liberal about that.”
Both Valdez and White will debate at St. James Episcopal Church in Austin on Friday at 7 p.m. A Quinnipiac University Poll released last month showed Abbott topped both Valdez and White. Whoever wins the Democratic nomination will face an uphill battle against Abbott, who has more than $40 million in his campaign fund and set a record for the most cash on hand ever reported by a statewide candidate in Texas back in January.
