An Abilene mother is still clinging to life in a Lubbock hospital after her apartment went up in flames, killing her 4-year-old son.
Her 9-year-old son escaped with minor injuries.
“She went back in to get Liam,” her father Larry Reed said. “That’s when the fire took her. I don’t know how close she got to reaching Liam but from what the fire department told us, she basically had ahold of his hand.”
Both Liam and Ashley Hardy were flown to University Medical Center in Lubbock. That’s where young Liam died and his mother has been since July.
“The only thing she knows for sure right now is her name and who I am,” Reed added.
He has been by her side the whole time, watching her face death several times.
He is now having to live out of an RV after extended stay lodging became too expensive.
“It’s tight but we are making it,” he explained.
He credits the help from their church and community members for allowing them the chance to stay by Ashley’s side.
The church is also making sure Ashley’s husband and other son Aiden are well cared for back home.
The exact cause of the Warwick Apartment Fire has not been determined, though investigators believe it was accidental in nature.
Anyone who wishes to donate to the Hardy family can visit the First Abilene Federal Credit Union – just mention Ashley Hardy or Ashley Reed. Donations are also being accepted at the Pleasant Grove Church in Anson.
