An Abilene man accused of sexually assaulting a child multiple times a month for years has been arrested 17 years after the allegations were first reported.

Kerry Sims, 47, was taken into custody last week and charged with Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child after a case against him was re-opened in January.

Court documents say a 9-year-old victim initially made an outcry to police in 2001, claiming Sims had sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions, but she later recanted her statement and said she lied.

17 years later, an Abilene police detective re-examining the case contacted the victim again, and she confirmed the original allegations, telling the officer Sims sexually assaulted her 1-2 times per week from ages 6 to 9.

The victim added that she recanted her initial outcry because she, “got scared because everyone kept asking her about it, so she told everyone she lied, but that is not the truth.,” according to the documents.

The documents also suggest there may be other victims.

Sims is now being held in the Taylor County Jail on bonds totaling more than $100,000.
