Police in the Texas Panhandle say an armed burglary suspect has been found dead inside a burned recreational vehicle following a standoff.
An Amarillo police statement says no officers were hurt during Monday night’s exchange of gunfire with the suspect, whose name wasn’t immediately released.
Police didn’t immediately say how the suspect died. An autopsy was ordered.
Amarillo police Cpl. Jeb Hilton says an RV owner reported finding an unknown armed man inside and the suspect pointed a gun at arriving officers.
One officer fired at the suspect, who went back into the RV and shot at police. Officers deployed a chemical irritant into the RV, then saw the suspect light a fire. His body was found in the burned RV.
The officer who opened fired is on administrative leave.
