A box of military ammunition fell out of a helicopter, crashing into a Northeast El Paso elementary school Thursday afternoon.
According to a spokesperson for the Ysleta School District, the box fell on the roof of Parkland Elementary around 3:45 p.m. No one was hurt.
According to Fort Bliss, local police secured the ammunition and will return it to Fort Bliss Military Police.
“I’m extremely sorry for any damage done to the neighboring elementary school, and I am grateful that no one was injured,” said Col. Jay Hopkins, commander of the 1st Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade. “The incident is under investigation.”
Fort Bliss says it will conduct an investigation into the mishap and reassess current flight patterns to ensure that incidents similar to this will not occur again.
